3 steps to elevate your home

Find One-of-a-kind pieces for your home like an interior designer.

If you feel like you are missing that one object that pulls the whole room together, the piece you notice every time you walk in. Here's how to find it, for your home.

Step 1 - Look at what is missing

If you have put in the work but something still feels off in your home, It's tempting to rethink everything. And start questioning a new sofa, new colours or even start again. When in fact, usually your room is just waiting for one thing to bring it all together.

Interior Designers use this trick to find what is missing:

Stand in the doorway as if you were a guest and ask yourselff...

1. What does my eye land on?
2. Where does my eye have nowhere to go?
3. How does the room feel after dark?
4. Does every corner carry its weight?
5. Are there surfaces with nothing to anchor it?

Step 2 - Choosing objects that no one else has

The object that finishes a room should be the one your guests pick up and ask about.

Interior designers know this - they look for materials with character, shapes that aren't obvious, pieces made in small runs or by hand. Natural stone, raw textures, something with weight to it. It usually costs a little more than the alternative. But the difference between a room that looks nice and one people remember is almost always that one piece you invested in.

Step 3 - Let light do the work

Most rooms that feel unfinished aren't missing furniture, they're missing the right light.

Ilse Crawford - former editor of Elle Decoration, and the mind behind some of the most recognisable hospitality interiors in Europe — has long argued that warm, low-level light around 2300K is what makes a space feel truly lived in. A lamp on a shelf, a soft glow on a side table, something that changes the way the room feels when the evening comes in. That's usually the piece that was missing all along
